Telling the fascinating story of the Omaha DePorres Club, Matt Holland’s book reveals a little-known chapter of some of the early battles against racism in the United States. Along with detailed accounts of the Omaha DePorres Club’s pioneering efforts, Holland’s book also gives insights into the people who dared to challenge the racism of a city known as “the Birmingham of the North.”
Well written local history of anti-racism activism in Omaha, Nebraska, primarily during the 1950s and early ’60s. Fascinating account from a city not in the headlines of the Civil Rights era.
Amazon Review
Enlightening read. Not only did I learn about the DePorres Club, I learned what commitment and sacrifice look like, what strategic thinking looks like, what Christian community looks like when it is real and truly interracial. …I don’t know how this book will change me, how its lessons will become those I walk out. But I certainly needed the story.
